Spring on the Verde Canyon Railroad route.

 Seasonal Highlights

Often called Arizona's 'Other' Grand Canyon, Verde Canyon Railroad offers passengers the opportunity to see a beautiful red rock canyon up close in all its seasonal glory. Considered one of the finest scenic train rides in North America, be assured you'll want to return with friends and family again and again. A perfect addition to any vacation.

Year-Round
The Verde Canyon Railroad is truly a “train for all seasons” but there are a number of features that remain consistent on each remarkable journey…

  • Spectacular geology, including a monocline fold
  • Magnificent vistas on inner canyons
  • Sinagua Indian ruins dating back to 600 A.D.
  • Remnants of a bygone era of mining on which a community was built
  • A lively and unpredictable riparian (adjacent to, or along banks of river) habitat, a lifeline to a variety of wildlife and waterfowl featuring the American Bald Eagle, Great Blue Herons and Red-tailed hawks, deer, Javelina and elk
  • Unique railroad structures including S.O.B. canyon trestle and Perkinsville covered bridge
  • Passage through a 680-foot, manmade tunnel

Summer
Escape the ordinary. The cottonwood, sycamore and mesquite trees are in full bloom. Resident black hawks and Great Blue Herons can be seen cruising the river. Late summer rain and early evening thunderstorms create waterfalls over glistening crimson cliffs. Gather family and friends to see what’s happening outside the city during the summer.

Autumn
As the mercury begins its yearly dip, the gold, bronze and copper leaves of the Verde Canyon dominate the visual landscape on the Fall Colors Tour. It is a season when the wildlife, including deer, Javelina and antelope become more active and visible. Unique beer, brats and Oktoberfest fare with Oom-pa-pa music is bountiful on the patio for Ales on Rails, daily in October.

Winter
They’re back!  Late winter signals that Eagle Watch is on in the Verde Canyon.  Over 35 bald and golden eagles return each year to winter in the secluded Verde Canyon, which is a great winter respite for waterfowl and people, alike.

Combine your love of the outdoors with the romance of chocolate aboard the decadent Chocolate Lover's Train offered over a luxuriously long Valentines Day weekend February 11 through 17.
