The Verde Canyon Railroad takes passengers deep into this private chasm, slowly revealing layers of time through each stratum of lava, granite or sandstone, unveiling the ancient secrets of our planet’s interior.

What was once a large, shallow lake marks the entrance to the Verde Canyon, evidenced by the prevalent limestone deposits formed from sediment.   Basalt (cooled lava) was layered as a result of a volcanic flow which filled the region.  Rich volcanic soil encourages vegetation and makes the rock less susceptible to erosion.

Sandstone, deposited in horizontal layers, can be seen pressed at an angle against basalt creating a formation known as a “monocline” or a “fold.” Buried deep under the earth’s crust, these layers of rock were heated to a point where they could be bent and twisted by a tremendous geological force. When rock layers are cooler and more brittle, these same forces can cause the strata to break and fracture, creating what geologists call a “fault.” A fold is a bend; a fault is a break.
